Glossary of terms for Cell Phones


Display Type

Device display can be:

- STN (Super Twisted Nematic).
- TFT (Thin Film Transistor).
- TFD (Thin Film Diode).
- OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode).



Display Size

The size of the display in pixels.



Camera

Device with the ability to take a still picture or shoot a video clip using a built-in camera.



Weight

The weight of the device with battery attached.



Design

Bar
Rectangular shape device with no flip design features.

Folder
Device has two parts; the upper part contains the display, and the bottom part contains the numeric keyboard.

Flip
Device has two parts; the numeric keyboard flips down to reveal a qwerty keyboard.

Slide
Device with two plates which slide apart, unveiling the numeric keyboard.

Swivel
Device that allow the user to rotate the top face to the side and up.



Messaging

Messaging functions of the device. The possible values are:

- SMS (Short Message Service).
- EMS (Electronic Message Service).
- MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service).
- Email.
- Fax.
- Instant Messaging.



Operating System

OS (Operating System) is the software that controls the operation of a device, directs the input and output of data and controls the processing of programs. His role is managing the functioning of the device, running the applications programs, serving as an interface between the device and the user.



Stand-by

The amount of time the phone can stay connected to the network without recharging.



Talk-time

The amount of time the phone can make calls without recharging.



GPRS

GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is the first high-speed digital data service that allows information to be sent and received with speed from 56 up to 114 kbps.



HSCSD

HSCSD (High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data) is a service that allows information to be sent and received with maximum speed up to 57.6 kbps and is used for videoconferencing and multimedia transmission.



3G

3G (3rd Generation) provides video calls, streaming, high speed downloads and voice calls, all in the same time.



EDGE

EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) is a technology which acts as a bolt-on enhancement to GPRS networks, that allows improved data transmission rates.



WLAN

WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) is a wireless local area network that uses radio waves to enable communication between devices in a limited area.



Bluetooth

Bluetooth provides wireless connection and enables you to transfer data from one device to another, up to 1, 10 or 100 meters.



USB

USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a plug-in connection that is used to connect devices to PC and has a maximum bandwidth of 12 Mbps (megabits per second) for USB 1.0 and 1.1 or 480 Mbps for Hi-Speed USB 2.0.



Infrared Port

Infrared port provides wireless connection and enables you to transfer data from one device to another, only in close distance and direct visibility.



Built-in GPS receiver

GPS (Global Positioning System) is a system for determining postion on the Earth's surface by comparing radio signals from several satellites.
